Coming into Wednesday’s clash with Wilbraham & Monson Academy in the NEPSAC Class C Quarterfinals, the Lady Lions basketball team had relied upon great team defense and transition offense all season long. Wednesday would be no different. Captain Jamese Word ’16 led LCA on the defensive end, constantly applying pressure and forcing turnovers. Her teammates then converted those turnovers into points. Within the first ten minutes of play, LCA jumped out to a 26-4 lead over the visitors.
As the game went on the team relied upon their hustle and tenacity on the defensive end, not allowing Wilbraham & Monson the chance to get back into the game. Offensively, the Lady Lions were led by captain Shae Roys ’16 with 24 points and 5 assists while Melissa Romao ’16 also scored 21 points and had 2 assists of her own. Samantha Gibson ’16 and captain Courtney Teehan ’16 played great on both ends of the floor for LCA. Brooke Krivickas ’20 stepped up in a big way as LCA experienced foul trouble in the first half. All in all, it was a great team effort and the home crowd gave LCA a big advantage. In the end, LCA defeated Wilbraham & Monson 62-38.
The Lady Lions will now host St. Andrew’s on Saturday, March 5 at 2:00 pm. The NEPSAC Semifinal will be a rematch from December 18 in which LCA defeated St. Andrew’s 56-42.
